2006 FIFA World Cup
stadia pull in the fans
2006 FIFA World Cup
A year away from the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the new stadia
and arenas around Germany are proving highly popular.
German champions and recordholders Bayern Munich have
suspended season ticket sales after receiving 35,000
orders ? the highest sales figures in the club?s long
and illustrious history. Season tickets were frozen
in mid-July to ensure that the clubs? 102,000 members
have the opportunity to purchase individual match tickets
during the coming season.
Bayern?s first two matches of the season in their new
arena are already sold out. The games against Borussia
Mönchengladbach (5 August 2005) and Hertha Berlin (27
August) will be 66,000 full houses.
FC Cologne, making a welcome return to the Bundesliga,
have also enjoyed increased sales in their new FIFA
World Cup stadium. Four weeks away from the start of
the new Bundesliga season, 25,500 season tickets had
already been snapped up: an unprecedented statistic
for the Cologne club.
The trend is also mirrored at Eintracht Frankfurt?s
new stadium ? if on a more modest scale than in Munich
or Cologne. The newly promoted side have sold 12,500
season tickets ? a club record. Hertha Berlin will open
the season in the stadium that stages the FIFA World
Cup Final on 9 July 2006. And 14,500 fans have already
ensured their places to watch coach Falko Götz?s team
at every home game: an increase of 2,500 tickets on
last season.
Sustainability was the central philosophy in the construction
and renovation of the twelve FIFA World Cup stadia.
However, summer 2005 has illustrated how investment
can stimulate business and record support even in the
build up to the tournament.

Visions of Football: An international
dialogue
FIFA worldcup
Some of German football's newly-constructed stadiums
proved their worth at a highly successful FIFA Confederations
Cup last month, helping fuel a rising tide of anticipation
ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany?.
With interest so high, now seems the right time for
a thorough examination of the game as it is today. A
major conference in Munich this month will do just this,
looking football's relationship with everything from
society to the world of medicine, via such areas as
business and the media.
From 27-29 July, the International Trade Fair (IMC)
and the newly opened FIFA World Cup Stadium, Munich
will host 'Visions of Football', an international conference
organised by the Bavarian state government and the city
of Munich in co-operation with FIFA and the 2006 FIFA
World Cup? Organising Committee.
The event boasts a distinguished line-up of speakers
ready to initiate an international dialogue on the role
of the game. More than 30 leading personalities, including
FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter, Bayern Munich chairman
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Professor Egon Franck of the
University of Zurich, will examine and explore subjects
including 'Football's role in bringing people together',
'Promoting talent in premier league football', and 'The
opportunities and risks resulting from the increasing
commercialisation of world football' in presentations
and round-table discussions.

A Review of the 2005 FIFA Confederations
Cup
2006 FIFA World Cup
Brazil's 4-1 triumph in the FIFA Confederations Cup
Final was still a fresh and vivid memory when Franz
Beckenbauer and Horst R. Schmidt opened the first letter
of thanks.
"We were truly impressed by the joyful atmosphere
in the stadiums," wrote Japanese association President
Saburo Kawabuchi. "We sensed the German fans' heartfelt
passion for football."
Japan Football Association General Secretary Takeo
Hirata expanded on his President's congratulatory theme.
"The training and match facilities laid on by the
Organising Committee were outstanding. The friendly
support provided by the OC and its staff made our entire
squad feel completely at home in your beautiful country."
The authorities will be delighted at the positive reaction
to their efforts. The organisers had to cater for 21,000
hospitality customers, issue more than 20,000 accreditations
(each one in less than three minutes), arrange around
100 shuttle journeys at each venue every day, train
and manage 2,000 volunteers through a total of 25,000
man hours, admit close on 600,000 spectators to the
stadiums, and entertain untold millions of TV viewers
around the world. The tournament passed off (almost)
without incident, and (almost) always put smiles on
faces.
The 2005 event has catapulted the FIFA Confederations
Cup to a new level of respect within the game, thanks
to a happy blend of fantastic football, packed stadiums,
a wonderful atmosphere and global media reporting.
